Aung Kyaw Zaw was appointed to command the Northeastern Regional Military Command with a rank of Brigadier General in August 2010 and continued to serve in that position with the rank of Brigadier General to at least 14 June 2011. During this time there was at least one alleged disappearance, killing, rape or torture committed by unit(s) under his command. He was then promoted in rank to Major General by at least 28 January 2012 and continued to command Northeastern Regional Military Command until September 2012 when he was transferred to command Southern Regional Military Command. He commanded Southern Regional Military Command with the rank of Major General from September 2012 to August 2015. In August 2015 he was promoted in rank to Lieutenant General and made commander of 3 Bureau of Special Operations to at least December 2017. During this time units under his command were accused of committing rape, killings and other violations as part of a genocide Rohingya in Rakhine State. He was then transferred to command 6 Bureau of Special Operations in 2017 and continued to command it until May 2018. His career after this point in time is not known.
