Tun Tun Naung was commander of Eastern Central Regional Military Command with rank of Brigadier General from at least 3 May 2012 to September 2012 when he was transferred to command Northern Regional Military Command. He commanded Northern Regional Military Command with the rank of Brigadier General from September 2012 to at least 26 February 2013. He was then promoted in rank to Major General from at least 26 May 2013 to 7 September 2014. While holding the rank of Major General and commanding the Northern Regional Military Command there was at least one alleged disappearance, killing, rape or torture committed by unit(s) under his command. Following this he was transferred to command the Yangon Regional Military Command starting 8 September 2014 to 10 August 2015. On 11 August 2015 he was promoted in rank to Lieutenant General and made commander of 1 Bureau of Special Operations, a position and rank he continued to hold until at least 6 February 2021. On 1 February 2021 Tun Tun Naung was appointed to lead the Ministry of Border Affairs and held that position to at least 13 September 2023.
