Mya Htun Oo became commander of the Eastern Central Regional Military Command in 2011 with the rank of Brigadier General and continued to hold that rank and position until at least 14 November 2011. During this time there was at least one alleged disappearance, killing, rape or torture committed by unit(s) under his command. He was then promoted in rank to Major General in 2012 and continued to command Eastern Central Regional Military Command until at least 28 January 2012. He then became the Chief of Staff of the army in 2012 with the rank of Major General which he held until at least December 2013. He was then promoted in rank to Lieutenant General in July 2014 and continued to be army chief of staff until 7 September 2014. On 8 September 2014 he was appointed to simultaneously command the Military Affairs Security and 6 Bureau of Special Operations. On 26 August 2016 he was moved up the military’s hierarchy to become Joint Chief of Staff and promoted to the rank of General. He served as Joint Chief of Staff with the rank of General until 3 February 2021. He was appointed Minister of Defense on 1 February 2021 and served in this position until 2 August 2023. On 3 August 2023 he was made transport and communications minister.
