Than Hlaing was commander of the Northwestern Regional Military Command with the rank of Brigadier General as of 25 April 2016. He was then appointed commander of Eastern Central Regional Military Command on 26 August 2016 with the rank of Major General. He held that position and rank until at least 22 May 2020. While holding the rank of Major General commanding the Eastern Central Regional Military Command there was at least one alleged disappearance, killing, rape or torture committed by unit(s) under his command. He was then promoted in rank to Lieutenant General as of 2 February 2021. He was also appointed the commander of the Myanmar Police Force on 2 February 2021 and held that position until May 2022.
