Before becoming a senior commander in the Myanmar Army, Aung Aung commanded the 33 Light Infantry Division when it was accused of committing rape, killings and other violations as part of a genocide Rohingya in Rakhine State. Following this he became a senior commander, commanding the Southwestern Regional Military Command before moving up the army’s hierarchy to command the 2 Bureau of Special Operations. As a senior army general, all allegations of violations being committed by units under his command occurred while he held the rank of Lieutenant General.
