Phone Myat commanded the Northeastern Regional Military Command with the rank of Major General from at least 13 May 2016 to at least 23 January 2017. While holding the rank of Major General and commanding the Northeastern Regional Military Command there was at least one alleged disappearance, killing, rape or torture committed by unit(s) under his command. He was then appointed commander of Northwestern Regional Military Command in May 2017 and continued to command it until 27 May 2019. On 28 May 2019 he was appointed commander of Western Regional Military Command and held that position until July 2020. He was then appointed Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Home Affairs in July 2020 and held that position until April 2021. In April 2021 he was promoted in rank to Lieutenant General and made commander of 3 Bureau of Special Operations. He held that position until at least 17 August 2023.
